Licensing optimization – Stake of dynamic optimized license assignment

Licensing optimization – Stake of dynamic optimized license assignment

Some people claim that licensing is a matter of interpretation, and there is not one single true licensing position. This implies that definitions of licensing rules are ambiguous or inconsistent. Although this is sometimes true, we should remember that licensing rules are the operational version of the “granted rights” clause that exist in any software contract. Interpretations of licensing rules should always be the result of a legal analysis.

It is difficult to argue that Microsoft licensing is unclear. Microsoft updates its product terms multiple times per year, and the history of all product terms is fully accessible to everyone, publicly.

Oracle licensing rules are much more discussed and subject to debate.

And everyone who knows SAP licensing would agree that SAP indirect access is not easy to determine.

At Elée, we believe that it is too risky to rely on hypothetical multiple interpretations of licensing rules to try to escape from contractual obligations. We always recommend doing the rigorous work of licensing calculation.

Elée has deep expertise on selecting the most optimized licensing rules in situations where we can choose between multiple rules – which happens all the time with complex vendors.

Our SamBox.io licence optimization tool enables dynamic optimized licensing allocation, instead of the static license allocation used by auditors and commercial SAM tools. Dynamic allocation is essential in complex environments (for example where there are thousands of servers and clusters) and can yield significant cost saving.
